OPI Stay The Night (Liquid Sand)

I couldn't resist picking up the four new OPI liquid sand minis- I'm always intrigued by a new texture/effect in nail polish, and I haven't seen anything quite like this before. Today I've got "Stay The Night" to show you- this is a black with red glitter combination. It makes me think of asphalt with glowing red embers. I found application to be easy, and this covered in two coats. In reality, the red glitter in this sparkles like crazy- definitely worth checking out in person!

This last picture was taken shortly after application, and it looks a little bit glossy yet. I did find that in order to maximize the fully matte "liquid sand" look, it is best to let this one dry completely. I've noticed that with some swatches of Stay The Night other bloggers have mentioned that they wish it was less glossy and more matte- I think this may be partly because Stay The Night was swatched, but not allowed to fully dry. Just a hunch, anyways.

Overall, I really like the liquid sand effect. It's not terribly gritty, although if you're sensitive to texture you might not like it. The best way I could think to describe it was that it feels kind of like a cat's tongue. Okay, that sounds like a weird comparison to make, but it's strangely accurate. It's not so gritty that it will snag on anything, but it does feel kind of rough.

The other interesting thing I noticed about this polish is that when first applied, it looks like a normal non-glitter polish. Then it kind of granulized into this grittier finish. Pretty cool. Removal was also a breeze- not at all like removing an all-glitter polish.

What do you you think of the liquid sand finish? Have you, or will you, be trying these out? I'd love to hear your thoughts on these!

  1. This is my favorite Liquid Sand polish! And I completely agree with you on the discrepancy of how other bloggers have described this finish as being slightly glossy because I wore mine for a week and it definitely did not look glossy like their swatch pictures. I would exactly describe this looking like asphalt! I tried my best to post my pictures to look more accurate to the intended finish...yours look great though!

    1. Glad to hear that your experience mirrors mine! I think the glossiness must just be because it hasn't had enough time to dry. I remember thinking it looked too glossy after I put it on, but an hour (or maybe even more?) later it had become significantly more matte.

  2. While I do think it looks interesting, I know for sure, that I'll not buy any of them...

    1. It's quite alright to find something interesting, without liking it personally! I do think it would drive someone who prefers super smooth nails crazy.

  4. Lol cat's tongue comparison is too adorable sounding. This looks really interesting, I can't help but think of an interesting textured rock when looking at the texture. I'm also quite surprised that you mentioned removal was easier than a glitter nail polish because it doesn't seem like so!

    1. Haha, glad you think it sounds adorable rather than straight up weird. And this finish totally reminds me of some kind of rock or mineral... I'm quite taken with it. And I thought removal would be a nightmare, but it's truly not bad! It's a bit tougher than a creme finish, sure, but it's nothing like removing full-on glitter.

The color's really pretty, but I'm not sure yet how I feel about the texture.

    1. The texture is definitely something to get used to- at first I kept running my fingers over it, but then I acclimatized. I quite like it now!

  7. I would totally pick this up it the glitter was orange. I would love for it to actually look like embers. Anyways I've seen them in person, I've seen them in swatches and I still don't know how to feel about them :P

    1. I really hope they DO make an ember polish- that would be pretty excellent. Have you tried one of the liquid sands yourself? I'd recommend it before making a call- the texture is a unique experience, probably not for everyone, but interesting!

  8. Hmmm.... I have to say the more I see these liquid sand things the more I don't really like them that much. I have a bottle from Ulta that dries like this and I did not like it. I was one of my very first posts... I'll just stick to hex glitters.

    1. Is that Ulta Material Girl? Haha, I had to go check that post out. Yeah, I hate when polishes mix bumpy glitter and an opaque base- it gets too lumpy. I definitely feel differently about the liquid sand, though! It just depends on personal preference.
